Number- Addition and Subtraction of four (4) digit numbers
Topic: Addition and Subtraction of 4 digit numbers It may seem a bit intimidating adding four digit numbers but you have the basic knowledge needed already from learning how to add smaller numbers. When adding we set the numbers out under their proper placement to make it easier, for four digit numbers we know we have the thousands, hundreds, tens and ones placement. When adding numbers we may have to carry numbers over and we may not have to but because you are a genius, you will be learning both ways. Without carrying numbers 1. Adding ones Th H T O 6 1 3 2 + 3 4 2 5 7 2. Adding tens Th H T O 6 1 3 2 + 3 4 2 5 5 7 3. Adding hundreds Th H T O 6 1 3 2 + 3 4 2 5 5 5 7 4. Adding thousands Th H T O 6 1 3 2 + 3 4 2 5 9 5 5 7 With carrying over numbers
Adding ones
Th H T O 1
6 3 7 6 + 2 8 5 4 0
|
Add the numbers under the one’s placement, which are 6 + 4 = 10.
Write 0 below in ones column and carry 1 into the tens column. |
Adding tens
TH H T O 1 1
6 3 7 6 + 2 8 5 4 3 0
|
Add the numbers under the tens placement, which are 1 + 7 + 5 = 13.
Write 3 below in tens column and carry 1 into the hundreds column. |
Adding hundreds
TH H T O
1 1 6 3 7 6 + 2 8 5 4 2 3 0
|
Add the numbers in the hundreds placement, which are 1 + 3 + 8 = 12.
Write 2 below in hundreds column and carry 1 into the thousands column. |
Adding thousands
TH H T O 1
6 3 7 6 + 2 8 5 4 9 2 3 0
|
Add the numbers in the thousands placement, which are 1 + 6 + 2 = 9.
Write 9 below in thousands column. |
Subtraction of 4 digit numbers Like we did for addition we put the numbers under their correct placement before we start to subtract. Remember since we are doing 4 digit numbers the placements are Thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. Let's look at this video *when he says 'units' he is referring to the ones placement. Remember TH H T O *
Using the lesson from this video you now know how to subtract four(4) digit numbers...
Congratulations!
