What are Nouns? Nouns are naming words. They name people, places, animals and things. Nouns also name ideas such as love and courage. Types of Nouns There are different types of nouns:

Collective Nouns
Common nouns are nouns we use every day and are that not special or specific to any one person, place or thing. Examples of common nouns are as follows: Boy, girl, chair, book, desk, jaguar, classroom, computer, doctor, baby, etc.

The boy enjoys playing football.

My father bought a new chair for the office.

A jaguar is a wild cat.

I will be getting a new computer for my birthday.

Our doctor gave the baby a clean bill of health.
If you look carefully, you will find that each of these sentences has more than one noun. These are highlighted in red. Proper Nouns Proper nouns are special because they give the names of specific people, places animals or things. Here are examples of proper nouns: Dr. Jones, Kimani, Blue Mountains, Butch, Dunrobin Christian Academy Notice: Each proper noun begins with a capital letter.
