Concrete Nouns
Concrete nouns are names of people, places and things
that we can experience through our senses – sight, hearing, touch,
taste, smell.
Concrete nouns are also common nouns.

  • She put the book on the table.

The noun, book, is a concrete noun. You can touch it, see it, or even smell it.
 
Write the following sentences in your notebook and
underline the concrete nouns.

  1. The aroma of freshly-baked cookies filled the kitchen.
  2. The barn was on fire.
  3. The crossbow was loaded with an arrow.
  4. There is a rainbow in the sky.
  5. The forks and spoons were arranged on the table.
  6. The soup was creamy and spicy.
  7. The sunlight streamed through the window.
  8. Children love blowing bubbles.
  9. The dolphins danced to the tune of the waves.
  10.  The old engine puffed out clouds of smoke.

 
What are abstract nouns?
Abstract nouns are names of things we cannot see, hear or touch. They name experiences, feelings and ideas.
Examples: honesty, obedience, freedom, growth
When Joseph dived into the violent waves to rescue drowning puppy, his bravery amazed the crowd of fishermen standing on the dock.
Bravery, in this sentence, is an abstract noun.
 

Write these sentences in your notebooks and circle the abstract nouns.
  1. We need to think about the importance of friendship.
  2. You can see the love the father has for his son.
  3. Bradley looked at the chocolate cake with greed in his eyes.
  4. After dinner everyone patted their full stomachs with satisfaction.
  5. Her eyes were full of hope as she opened her report card.
  6. We would like to see justice served.
  7. My childhood memories are a source of great joy for me.
