Subject: Religious Education
Topic: The Missionaries and Indentured Workers
The MissionariesA few years after the African slaves were brought to Jamaica, the Missionaries arrived on the island. They were mostly Methodists, Moravians, Baptists and Presbyterians. The Missionaries taught the slaves to read and write. They built churches on the island for the slaves to worship and hoped that when they learned about their religion that the slaves would be converted. The Missionaries also helped some of the slaves to become land owners by giving them pieces of land as gifts. The Indentured Workers The slaves were free to do as they pleased when slavery was abolished in 1838 so many chose not to work on the plantations. This resulted in a labour shortage. The Plantation owners had to seek workers from countries such as India, Israel, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, China and other places in the Middle East. Each set of worker took with them their own religious practices and beliefs. These workers were known as Indentured Workers. They were either free persons or prisoners who had to give forced labour for a number of years. Below are the religions practiced by each group of Indentured worker.
