Continents and Oceans

Earth is divided into landmasses and water bodies. 21% of the earth is land and 79% is water. The landmasses consist of continents and islands.

Continents – These are very large landmasses which are bordered by oceans. There are seven continents. These are, in order of size:

Asia

Africa
-
North America
-
South America
- Antarctica
- Europe

Australia (also called the island continent
Islands – These are smaller landmasses which are completely surrounded by water.

The WATER BODIES consist of the oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, ponds, bays, gulfs.

The largest of the water bodies are the oceans.

There are five oceans of the world.

Pacific Ocean (Largest ocean)

Atlantic Ocean

Indian Ocean
