Earth’s Movements -Rotation
A planet has two movements:
1. Rotation
-
The movement of a planet on its axis. This movement causes day and night. A complete rotation takes 24 hours.
2. Revolution
-
The movement of a planet around the sun. This movement takes one year and as a result we have the different seasons.
-
The earth rotates (spins) on its axis every 24 hrs.
-
The rotation causes day and night. The part of the earth facing the sun has day and the part away from the sun has night.
-
The earth rotates from west to east or anti-clockwise.
-
The earth is divided into two halves by an imaginary line called the equator. One half of the Northern Hemisphere and the other half is the Southern Hemisphere.
-
The earth has two poles, the North Pole and the South Pole.
-
Earth’s axis is an iimaginary line that runs from the north pole to the south pole.
-
The earth is tilted at an angle of 23 1/2o
-
The North Pole and the South Pole lean towards the sun at different times of the year.
-
The part of the earth that is tilted towards the sun receives the most sunlight and has summer because the earth is tilted and is revolving around the sun. This causes the four seasons, Spring, summer , Autumn, winter.
